If you need a sign (or four) that your career needs rejuvenation, allow this blog to point you in the right direction. Since 1994, MP Training and Recruitment has done just that for countless individuals and businesses, allowing everyone to achieve their goals.
Whether you’re a business looking for a permanent recruitment solution, or a burnt out employee who needs some motivation, we hope this blog is a clear sign that it’s time for a change.
Your ideas don’t feel supported
No matter what industry you’re in, everyone should expect their ideas to be heard at the very least. Not every idea will be actioned, but they should certainly be acknowledged and feedback should be provided to explain any relevant pros and cons.
If your contribution to group success is feeling undervalued or ignored, it’s natural for you to seek that affirmation somewhere else.
You’re not offered any career progression
In the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ (ABS) Job Mobility report for the 12 months to February 2023, 1.3 million Australians changed jobs, making up almost 10% of the country’s workforce.
The US’ Bureau of Labor Statistics has surveyed people born between 1957 and 1964 and found that they changed jobs an average of 5.7 times between the ages of 18 and 24. As people grow older, they tend to change jobs less frequently, but the survey still found 2.9 changes from ages 35 to 44.
The point is: if you’re not seeing any way forward, self improvement, or career progression in your current role, then it’s perfectly normal to seek new opportunities. Not only is it a great way to learn new skills and expand your knowledge, but it can expose you to new people with their own experiences, opinions, and processes.
The Mondays
Plain and simple, if you don’t enjoy coming in to work on a daily basis, something’s got to give. When you start to dread Mondays and weekends fly by far too quickly – or worse, it feels like every workday is a Monday – it’s a sure sign that a new job is on the horizon.
Recent data from the ABS finds that a majority of people (39.8% for men and 31.9% for women) work somewhere between 35 and 44 hours per week.
When you’re spending so much time on the job, it’s important that you’re enjoying your work and continue to look forward to it. With that said, you can hardly expect to enjoy every aspect of the job, but there should certainly be exciting elements.
If work is an absolute drag every day of the week, don’t settle for less than happy. Start your job search as soon as possible.
You work-life balance is off
One reason you can start to dread work is because you simply haven’t found enough time to focus on yourself during your free time. There’s nothing worse than coming to Sunday night only to realise you barely scraped the surface of the wishlist you’d been daydreaming about the previous week.
That hike you planned; the family time you crave; or the me-time with a good book. It all counts to support your mental and physical health, and missing it can make the subsequent work week even harder.
If your employer isn’t supporting your work-life balance, take it a little bit personally and get proactive about prioritising your own life satisfaction.
